Beldangi Marks the 34th International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Bhutanese refugee community in Beldangi observed the 34th International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December 2025. The special program was organized by the Bhutanese Refugee Association of the Disabled (BRAD) and carried the central slogan "Nothing About Us Without Us", emphasizing that people with disabilities must be included in decisions affecting their lives.

The day began with a rally from the BRAD office. Participants marched through the camp with banners and placards, later gathering at the Settlement Management Committee premises for a formal ceremony.

Speeches and Key Messages

Ms. Nisita Rai, a BRAD member, delivered the welcome remarks. She underlined the importance of full participation and community support for persons with disabilities, explaining that the slogan "Nothing About Us Without Us" reflects a global commitment to inclusion.

As the chief guest, Camp Secretary Mr. Sancha Hang stressed that respecting and supporting persons with disabilities is a shared responsibility. He noted a steady rise in the number of persons with disabilities in the camp and called for stronger advocacy, services, and community support to ensure their rights and dignity.

ID Card Update and Data Collection

Mr. Hang informed attendees that the Government of Nepal is preparing to issue ID Cards for refugees aged 16 and above. To support this process, the Settlement Management Committee is currently conducting data collection across the camp.

The required documents for individuals 16 years and above are listed below:

  • Health Card / Birth Registration / Birth Form photo copy
  • Census Slip photo copy
  • Father’s or Mother’s ID Card photocopy

Refugees with expired ID Cards are asked to submit:

  • Photo copy of the expired ID Card
  • Photo copy of the Census Card

Both documents should be submitted through the individual's Unit Head.

Community Response

The event drew active participation from persons with disabilities, family members, BRAD representatives, and local community leaders. Organizers reaffirmed their commitment to building a more inclusive, barrier-free community where decisions affecting persons with disabilities include their voices.

Program organizers closed the ceremony with renewed dedication to the day's core message: "Nothing About Us Without Us".
