“Mero Kavita – The First Poetry Reality Competition” Coming to Beldangi Bhutanese Refugee Settlement

Beldangi, Jhapa – A unique poetry reality competition titled “Mero Kavita – The Reality of Poetry” is set to take place at the Beldangi Natya Pariwar Hall inside the Bhutanese Refugee Settlement in Beldangi. The event is being organized by My Platform Event and Production House, with an ambitious vision to encourage and promote new poetic voices from across the country.

The organizers describe the competition as a “national-level stage for emerging poets to express, perform, and grow.” It aims to protect, promote, and recognize the talent of young poets while introducing the culture of spoken poetry and performance to a broader Nepali audience.

A Stage for New Voices

In recent years, poetry has found renewed popularity among young people in Nepal and within Nepali-speaking communities around the world. From social media performances to local poetry gatherings, a new generation of poets is expressing their feelings and experiences through verse. Recognizing this creative wave, My Platform Event and Production House decided to create a professional and reality-style competition dedicated entirely to poetry.

According to the organizers, Mero Kavita will be Nepal’s first poetry-based reality competition designed to showcase both the writing and presentation skills of participants. “We want to give poetry a stage just like music and dance already have,” said one of the event coordinators. “There are many talented poets whose work never reaches the public because they lack a platform. Mero Kavita is that opportunity.”

Participation and Entry Guidelines

Participation in the competition is open to anyone aged 16 years and above. Contestants must create a video in which they recite their own original poem. The video should be at least 2 minutes long and no longer than 4 minutes. Poets are free to choose any title or subject matter for their poem.

The deadline to submit videos is November 10, 2025. Participants can send their entries either through email at myplatform411@gmail.com or via WhatsApp at 9816990924. The organizing team encourages poets to maintain clear video and audio quality to ensure their performance can be properly evaluated.

Competition Format and Stages

The competition has been carefully structured to provide both learning and performance opportunities for participants. The process will unfold in several stages:

Initial Selection: Judges will review all the submitted poetry videos and select 50 participants based on creativity, expression, and originality.

Closed Training Session: The 50 selected poets will attend a three-day residential workshop, where they will receive training in writing, reading, and stage presentation.

Field Audition: After the training, a live field audition will be held. From this round, 30 poets will move forward to the next stage.

Reality Stage: The top 30 contestants will perform on stage in front of an audience and judges. Based on their performances, 25 poets will advance.

Themed Challenge: The judges will assign a specific title or theme, and the 25 remaining poets must compose and present a poem on that topic. From this round, 20 contestants will be selected.

Voting Stage: At this level, the audience will also play a crucial role. The votes of viewers will contribute to the contestants’ scores, adding an interactive and democratic element to the competition.

Elimination Rounds: With each stage, a few poets will be eliminated until the final four contestants remain.

Grand Finale: The top four poets will compete in the final round for the title of Mero Kavita Champion.

This step-by-step format ensures that the competition is not just about winning but also about growth, exposure, and learning. Each phase will test different aspects of poetry—from writing and performance to emotional expression and creativity.

Awards and Recognition

The winners will receive cash prizes, trophies, and certificates, along with national recognition. More importantly, the organizers hope the platform will help the poets gain confidence and visibility for their artistic work.

“The awards are symbolic,” said an event spokesperson. “What matters most is the opportunity for emerging poets to learn, perform, and be seen. We are building a bridge between raw talent and national exposure.”

Why Beldangi?

Hosting the event in the Beldangi Bhutanese Refugee Settlement carries deep symbolic meaning. Beldangi is home to thousands of Bhutanese refugees who have been living in Nepal for decades. Despite limited resources, the settlement has produced many talented artists, musicians, and writers.

By organizing the first edition of Mero Kavita in Beldangi, the team aims to highlight the creative spirit and resilience of this community. It also reflects the belief that poetry and art can emerge powerfully even in the most challenging environments.

“Beldangi is not just a place of struggle; it’s also a place of stories, emotions, and inspiration,” said one of the local coordinators from the Beldangi Natya Pariwar Hall. “Hosting this poetry event here gives our young people a sense of pride and possibility.”

Cultural and Social Impact

Beyond competition, Mero Kavita seeks to create a cultural movement. By blending traditional poetry with modern presentation styles, it aims to attract young people who might otherwise feel disconnected from literature.

The organizers believe that spoken-word poetry can help build empathy, social awareness, and creative expression. “Poetry is not just about rhymes and rhythm—it’s about telling your story,” said one of the mentors involved in the project. “Through this platform, participants will learn to use their voice to talk about identity, love, migration, nature, and social change.”

The event will also help connect poets from refugee backgrounds, local Nepali writers, and members of the global Nepali diaspora. Several guest poets and literary figures are expected to attend and mentor the participants during the workshop and live events.

Community Response

News of the competition has already generated excitement in and around Beldangi. Local organizations, schools, and youth clubs are encouraging young poets to participate. Many see it as an opportunity for Beldangi to be recognized not just for its history but also for its creativity.

Social media discussions around the event hashtag #MeroKavita have started spreading, with aspiring poets sharing short verses and introductions about their creative journey. The event’s promotional video, released earlier this week, received hundreds of views and positive reactions within hours.

Looking Ahead

Mero Kavita – The Reality of Poetry is expected to mark a new beginning in Nepal’s cultural landscape. While the country has long celebrated poetry through print and small gatherings, this format introduces a new dimension—combining art, performance, and public engagement in one creative platform.

By empowering young writers and giving them national visibility, the organizers hope to make poetry an integral part of mainstream entertainment and education. The event’s success could inspire similar initiatives in other regions of Nepal, making poetry more accessible and appreciated among the youth.

As the countdown to November 10, 2025 begins, excitement continues to build in Beldangi. For many young poets, this is not just a competition—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share their words with the world and let their voices be heard.
