Dozens of Nepali is trapped in dangerous malware disguised as “free FIFA World Cup streaming” apps.
According to Nepal Police Cyber Bureau, around 60 to 70 victims have already been affected, and losses have crossed NPR 70 lakh+.
💣 The Trap Behind “Free World Cup” Apps
Victims were lured through social media ads offering free live streaming of FIFA World Cup matches. After installing the app, users were prompted to download a fake “update” that looked completely legitimate.
“New version available – faster and smoother experience!”
The fake update used a Google Play Store-like interface to gain user trust. Once installed, it silently turned into a powerful malware.

- Requests Accessibility permissions
- Freezes phone screen for 10–15 minutes
- Takes full remote control of device
- Executes unauthorized bank transactions
Stolen money is transferred through multiple bank accounts and digital wallets using “money mule” networks.
