UN Delegation Visits Beldangi Refugee Camp

Beldangi, Jhapa | May 20, 2026

A high-level delegation led by Ms. Lila Pieters Yahia, the United Nations Resident Coordinator to Nepal, visited the Bhutanese refugee settlement in Beldangi on May 20, 2026.

The visiting team included Ms. Monique Sokhan from UNHCR, Mr. Arun G.C., Assistant FAO Representative, along with representatives from the RC Team, FAO, UNFPA, UNHCR, and LWF.

During an interaction with refugees, the Settlement Management Committee (SMC) Beldangi submitted a memorandum highlighting key issues and challenges faced by the refugee community. The memorandum emphasized the need for long-term solutions, improved access to basic services, and security for the future.

Meanwhile, a repatriation group led by former secretary D.B. Subba also submitted a separate memorandum, calling for the dignified return of Bhutanese refugees to their homeland.

In the same interaction, social workers Kamal Magar and Biren Magar, representing refugees who wish to remain in Nepal, submitted another memorandum requesting local integration as a final alternative. They handed over a petition signed by around 300 individuals separately to Ms. Lila Pieters Yahia and Ms. Monique Sokhan.

The visit once again highlighted differing perspectives within the refugee community regarding their future whether through repatriation, third-country resettlement, or local integration.
