Bhutanese Refugee Dance Group Wins 1st Prize in Mero Dance Universe Season–2

Damak, Jhapa | Beldangi Online Khabar – The Bhutanese Refugee Dance Group has created history by winning the 1st Prize in the Cultural Group Category of Mero Dance Universe Season–2, organized by the Intra National Welfare Support Foundation (INWSF). The victory came with a cash prize of Rs. 25 lakhs, making it one of the most significant achievements for the Bhutanese refugee community in Nepal and abroad.

A Landmark Achievement

Mero Dance Universe Season–2 is one of Nepal’s most competitive dance events, featuring participants from different cultural backgrounds. The Bhutanese Refugee Dance Group stood out with their performance that blended traditional Bhutanese-Nepali rhythms, vibrant costumes, and powerful storytelling.

Their act was more than entertainment; it was a cultural statement. Every move reflected the refugee community’s struggle, resilience, and determination to preserve its identity. Judges praised the group for authenticity, creativity, and stage presence.

The award of Rs. 25 lakhs not only rewards their hard work but also highlights the recognition of refugee talent on a national stage.

A Proud Moment for Refugees

For the more than 100,000 Bhutanese refugees who have lived in camps in eastern Nepal since the early 1990s, this victory carries special meaning. Many were forced to leave Bhutan after government policies marginalized Nepali-speaking citizens. Decades later, thousands remain in camps such as Beldangi, while others have resettled in countries including the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Despite these hardships, the community has worked tirelessly to keep its cultural practices alive. Dance and music have always been central to this effort. Winning Mero Dance Universe Season–2 has now elevated that cultural pride to a national platform.

“This is more than a trophy. It is recognition of who we are and what we stand for,” said one elder in Beldangi Camp after the announcement. “Our children have shown the world that we have not lost our roots, even after so many years in exile.”

The Significance of Rs. 25 Lakhs

The Rs. 25 lakhs prize money is not just symbolic. For a community that has faced financial limitations for decades, it represents opportunity. The amount can help fund further training, provide resources for cultural programs, and inspire more young people to pursue their passions.

Members of the dance group said the prize will be used to strengthen cultural projects and create more opportunities for refugee youth who aspire to showcase their talents.

“This win is proof that dedication and teamwork can overcome any obstacle,” said one of the group’s choreographers. “We want to use the prize to motivate the next generation to dream bigger.”

Role of INWSF

The Intra National Welfare Support Foundation (INWSF), which organized Mero Dance Universe Season–2, has been recognized for providing platforms for young talents from diverse backgrounds. By including refugee communities in the competition, INWSF ensured inclusivity and gave marginalized groups a chance to be heard.

In a statement, INWSF officials said the Bhutanese Refugee Dance Group’s performance was a reflection of Nepal’s multicultural richness. “The competition is about celebrating diversity and cultural heritage. The Bhutanese group’s victory shows the power of art in connecting people beyond boundaries,” the foundation noted.

Celebrations Across the Globe

News of the victory quickly spread across the Bhutanese diaspora. From camps in Nepal to resettled communities abroad, messages of congratulations poured in on social media.

In the United States, community leaders called it a “historic win that will inspire generations.” In Australia and Canada, Bhutanese youth groups posted celebratory videos online, calling the victory “a global pride for all Bhutanese refugees.”

Locally in Beldangi, the atmosphere was festive, with youths organizing small gatherings to honor the dancers. Parents and elders expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting how such achievements uplift morale in the camps.

More Than Just a Dance

The Bhutanese Refugee Dance Group’s win is not just about competition; it represents survival and identity. For years, refugees have struggled against invisibility. Achievements like this remind the wider world that they are more than statistics — they are a community with talent, culture, and potential.

It is the victory of every refugee child who dared to dream, every parent who sacrificed for their children’s future, and every community member who held onto hope.
